Immersive Rumi-inspired performance 'Shams' rejuvenated by Verdigris Ensemble incorporating fresh elements
Unleashing Emotions: "Shams" Reveals the Timeless Power of Rumi's Legacy
In the whirlwind of 40 days, the 13th-century poet Rumi and his mentor Shams Tabrizi forged a bond that resonated through the centuries, behind religious barriers and beyond cultural boundaries. This incredible story has now gripped Sam Brukhman, founder of the Verdigris Ensemble. Two years ago, he dreamt up Shams, an audacious audiovisual production that has left him speechless - and countless others similarly touched.
"It became evident that the music was merely a starting point. Audiences found themselves moved, connected, and seen," says Brukhman.
For its latest revival, "Shams" partners with the Crow Museum of Asian Art. Joy Bollinger, the artistic director of Bruce Wood Dance Dallas, adds choreography to the 55-minute piece. The collaboration extends further, employing Iranian American composer Sahba Aminikia, who weaves Rumi's verse into the heartstrings-pulling melodies of Farsi, backed by a 16-member choir, a string quartet, and atmospheric soundscapes. Furthermore, the visually-stunning staging is graced by the vivid brushstrokes of Dallas-based painter, Sara Baumann.
Find yourself captivated by Shams from May 23-25 at Moody Performance Hall, 2520 Flora St. Tickets range from $15 to $60. Prepare to be swept away by a poignant tale that transcends time, sweeping you into a realm of passion, love, and spiritual enlightenment.
