Immediate installation of efficient alert systems demanded
In a significant move to enhance public safety, the satellite-supported modular warning system (MoWaS) in Rhein-Kreis Neuss has partnered with Ströer, a leading outdoor advertising company in Germany. This collaboration leverages Ströer's extensive network of digital advertising displays to broadcast emergency alerts more widely.
How it Works
When an emergency arises, the MoWaS, developed by the German Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, generates and distributes warning messages. These messages are then sent electronically to Ströer’s digital advertising screens located throughout the district. Upon receiving the alert, the screens immediately switch from commercial content to show the official emergency warnings.
Ströer's Role
Ströer plays a crucial role as the infrastructure provider and operator of the digital signage network. By integrating with MoWaS, Ströer enables quick, wide-reaching dissemination of warnings using their existing digital advertising screens. This partnership effectively expands the reach of civil protection alerts to strategic locations such as streets, squares, and transport hubs in Neuss.
It is noteworthy that Ströer finances the operation of the displays through paid advertising inserts.
The Impact
The implementation of this system in Neuss marks a significant step forward in disaster management. The timely broadcasting of emergency alerts could potentially prevent tragedies like those that occurred during the flood disasters along the Ahr and upper Erft rivers. For instance, many deaths and some devastation in Erftstadt could have been prevented with timely warnings.
Future Plans
The goal is to change the current situation so that timely warnings can be given during emergencies. The MoWaS system has already gone live in Neuss, and the displays are connected to the system. However, discussions on the use of this solution in other areas are not yet underway.
Locations of Ströer Displays
Ströer digital advertising billboards are strategically placed in high-traffic areas such as street crossings, the train station, Rheinpark Center, and the pedestrian zone in Neuss.
This collaboration between MoWaS and Ströer promises to bring a more robust and efficient warning system to the public, enhancing safety and preparedness in the face of emergencies.
The innovative partnership between MoWaS and Ströer combines environmental-science data on climate-change and weather patterns with the technology of digital advertising, ensuring that emergency alerts related to these factors are broadcast efficiently. During an emergency, the MoWaS system, originally designed for civil protection, will disseminate warnings through Ströer's outdoor digital screens located in areas like streets, squares, and transport hubs in Neuss, such as Rheinpark Center and the pedestrian zone.
