2. Bundesliga: Patz Bids Adieu to Jahn Early - Beierlorzer Hunts for New Gaffer
Jahn bids farewell to Pätz swiftly - Beierlorzer seeks next leader - Immediate Departure of Patz from Jahn - Beierlorzer Seeks New Leadership
In an abrupt turn of events, Andreas Patz chose to cut his ties with SSV Jahn Regensburg sooner rather than later. With the management deciding against keeping Patz on board for the third division's upcoming season, Patz called it quits before the final two games of the season, citing personal reasons.
Patz's departure leaves a void as the team scrapes the bottom of the 2. Bundesliga barrel. The 41-year-old coach expressed his disappointment, befitting a man bearing the weight of his team's underperformance, which had prolonged their stay in the division.
"We never managed to chalk up enough wins in the last couple of months to secure our spot in the 2. Bundesliga. This sucks for me personally, as the head coach, I own a massive chunk of the team's lackluster performance," Patz explained candidly.
Nürnberg's destruction was his chance
Patz initially served as Joe Enochs' assistant during the promotion season. However, when Nürnberg handed Regensburg an embarrassing 3-8 defeat in late October, the club showed Enochs the door, making way for Patz to take the interim head coach position.
Later that month, Patz got promoted to permanent head coach until the end of the season. Despite dire financial resources at their disposal, Patz was unable to steer Jahn out of the relegation zone.
"After the Cologne showdown, I held an exhaustive, unflinching yet open and frank chat with Patz. Following these discussions and a thorough analysis of the entire season, we agreed it was high time for us to part ways," explained sports director Achim Beierlorzer. The club complied with Patz's request to terminate the agreement prematurely.
Regensburg in search of a spark
Mathematically knocked out, Jahn secured their demotion as the league's cellar-dwellers following the deadlock against Cologne last weekend. The team clocked up a paltry 24 points in 32 games.
"We're gunning for a fresh start in the 3. Liga and aim to confront the impending challenges with new enthusiasm and a revamped coaching team," Beierlorzer declared.
The assistant resumes his reign
"We want to thank Patz for his dedicated service as a coach and person at SSV Jahn for the past two years. Patz already played a pivotal role in the team's promotion last season as a member of the coaching staff. To add to that, he took over the reins in a challenging situation last November" Beierlorzer reminisced.
In the absence of Patz, current assistant Munier Raychouni will take the reins as interim coach for the remaining two games against Karlsruher SC this Sunday and a week later against SV Darmstadt 98. Beierlorzer now has the urgent task of finding a worthy successor.
