"Immediate Action Required": Lim Guan Eng advocates for Home Ministry's intervention regarding Akmal Saleh's flag dispute

In a significant development, US President Donald Trump has extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin for a meeting in Alaska on Friday. This marks the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

The potential meeting comes amidst uncertainty regarding a possible meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The White House has expressed optimism for such a meeting, with President Trump pushing for a bilateral meeting by the end of August. However, the Kremlin has not confirmed this, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has emphasized the need for a "step by step" process of lower-level talks before any summit.

The current status of a meeting between the two leaders remains uncertain. If it were to take place, it is expected that the leaders would discuss options to exert pressure on Russia and preparation for possible peace negotiations. Trump has insisted that land swaps will need to take place in the resolution of the Ukraine conflict, a stance that aligns with Moscow's demands for Kyiv to pull its forces out of several regions claimed by Moscow.

However, Kyiv has been firm in its stance. Zelensky has ruled out ceding territory seized by force and has warned against capitulating to Putin's demands, stating that concessions do not persuade a killer. The EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, has also stressed that a ceasefire should be in place before discussing concessions.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has been a major point of contention between the two nations. Key issues such as security guarantees and territorial concessions remain significant obstacles. Putin's past actions, including seeking regime change in Kyiv and reported assassination attempts on Zelensky, further complicate the prospects for a successful meeting.

Despite these challenges, the White House continues to advocate for a presidential meeting as a crucial step towards peace in Ukraine. Trump expects "constructive conversations" with Putin in the Alaska meeting, but plays down the possibility of a breakthrough. EU leaders, on the other hand, are planning to speak separately with both Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, due to concerns that Putin and Trump may force unacceptable compromises.

The meeting in Alaska is described by Trump as a "feel-out meeting" to gauge Putin's ideas for ending the war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has invited European leaders, EU and NATO chiefs for virtual talks on Wednesday. EU foreign ministers have also met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and examined imposing a 19th package of sanctions on Russia.

It remains unclear if Putin would accept a meeting with Zelensky. Zelensky's possible presence at the Alaska summit is a possibility, according to US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker. The outcome of this meeting could have significant implications for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the future of US-Russia relations.
