IMD Predicts Above-Normal Rainfall for South India Oct-Dec After Robust Monsoon

IMD Predicts Above-Normal Rainfall for South India Oct-Dec After Robust Monsoon

The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted above-normal rainfall for South Peninsular India from October to December. This follows an early and robust southwest monsoon season, which brought significant rainfall and advanced crop sowing.

The southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala on 24 May, nearly a week ahead of schedule, and covered the entire country by 29 June, about a week earlier than usual. This early onset was accompanied by above-normal rainfall, with June to September recording an 8% surplus. The 2025 monsoon season delivered 937.2 mm of rainfall, which is 108% of the long period average, ranking fifth-highest since 2001.

The early and heavy rainfall has had a positive impact on crops. The maize area increased by 12.5% to reach 9.48 million hectares, while the paddy area reached 43.85 million hectares, up 1.97% from the previous year. As of 12 September, the crop sowing area reached 111 million hectares, exceeding the normal area of 109.7 million hectares. However, rainfall distribution was uneven, with Northwest India receiving 127% of its LPA, while East and Northeast India received only 80%, marking the second lowest since 1901.

The IMD's forecast of above-normal rainfall for South Peninsular India from October to December could further boost agricultural production, following a productive monsoon season. However, farmers in regions that received below-normal rainfall may face challenges. The monsoon withdrawal, currently stalled due to low pressure, will determine the final impact on crops and post-monsoon activities.
