Imam and Rabbi Call for Unity After Solingen Attack

In the wake of the suspected Islamist attack in Solingen, Imam Kadir Sanci and Rabbi Andreas Nachama express their concerns. "The news from Solingen has hit me hard," said Sanci, joining Rabbi Nachama, in inviting everyone for a peace prayer on Thursday (6:00 PM) at the construction site of the House of One project in Berlin-Mitte. The guest of honor is Protestant pastor Margot Käßmann.

Sanci points out the historical weight Solingen carries, recalling the 1993 house fire that claimed the lives of five Turkish women and girls due to far-right extremists. He urges Germany to not tolerate terrorism, regardless of its motive - religious or far-right. Unity is the key to lasting societal harmony, he emphasizes.

Nachama echoes Sanci's sentiments, warning against hatred, ignorance, and radical persuasions that fuel acts of violence. Extremism must be confronted and inhumane ideologies opposed, he adds.

The attack in Solingen left three lives and eight others injured, allegedly committed by a Syrian man suspected of supporting the Islamic State terror group.

The House of One, a symbol of cross-religious unity, is currently under construction in Berlin-Mitte. It aims to serve Jews, Muslims, and Christians under one roof, promoting shared values and education.

The tragic events in Solingen underscore the importance of religious harmony, as Sanci stresses. The House of One project stands as a testament to this belief, inviting all faiths to join its peace prayer.

Fostering Unity Against Terrorism

Faith leaders can contribute to unity and opposition to terrorism in several ways:

  1. Promote Interfaith Dialogue: Encourage open conversations between different religious communities.
  2. Unambiguous Condemnation: Clearly express opposition to terrorism and its ideologies through public statements and sermons.
  3. Education and Awareness: Raise awareness about the dangers of radicalization and the importance of peaceful coexistence through community programs and educational materials.
  4. Community Engagement: Listen to concerns and provide support to those affected by terrorism.
  5. Collaborate with Authorities: Partner with law enforcement and government agencies to prevent future attacks.
  6. Emphasize Inclusive Values: Advocate for values like tolerance, respect, and compassion.
  7. Address Root Causes: Advocate for policies that promote social justice and equality.
  8. Support Integration Efforts: Create an inclusive atmosphere for immigrants and refugees.
  9. Encourage Civic Engagement: Encourage community members to participate in democratic processes.
  10. Foster Peace: Promote peaceful conflict resolution methods and encourage coexistence.

This strategy can help religious leaders contribute to a more cohesive and resilient society, combating extremism and promoting unity. [2][4]
