Opera singer and fashion entrepreneur Hreinn Líndal, famed for his luxury clothing establishment H. Líndal on Skólavörðustígur, dressed Iceland's first female president, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, during her tenure. Their professional collaboration flourished into an enduring friendship, with Líndal commissioning prestigious fashion houses such as Cerruti 1881, Valentino, and Hermès to create the president's wardrobe.

Speaking about the era, Líndal reminisced, "At the time Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was elected president, I was leading H. Líndal, a store modeled after Europe's high-end fashion boutiques. Owing to my connections with French and Italian fashion houses, my collection showcased an extensive range of Cerruti 1881 pieces, along with items from Hermès and Valentino."

A personal relationship emerged when President Finnbogadóttir visited H. Líndal's store to discuss her wardrobe requirements and upcoming official engagements. "I remember capturing a beautiful outdoor photograph of her," Líndal shared, "which I sent to the designers and tailors I consulted with, to provide them insight into her persona."

One memorable outfit was a Valentino dress chosen by Líndal for the president's first official visit—a banquet hosted by Queen Margrethe of Denmark. Traveling to Florence, the heart of the fashion world at the time, Líndal collaborated with Valentino's creative minds to create a stunning, unique piece.

"I met two elegant older women who ran the store," Líndal recalled. "They regarded it as an honor for Valentino to design a dress for the world's first elected female president." The dress made a lasting impression, with President Finnbogadóttir delivering a memorable speech and leaving a powerful impression on the international crowd. As a token of gratitude, she presented Líndal with a Royal Copenhagen vase.

Their friendship endured with President Finnbogadóttir often wearing Líndal's designs during her state visits and public engagements. "With her warm and graceful personality, everything she did, she did with care," Líndal fondly recalled.

In Icelandic fashion circles, Hreinn Líndal was widely recognized for his refined taste and curation of beauty. His home, filled with meticulously selected objects, bore the scent of Bvlgari perfume and played host to a grand piano. Líndal embraced the Italian luxury brand Loro Piana for his personal wardrobe, celebrated for its exquisite fabrics and elegant garments.

Reflecting on his experience of dressing President Finnbogadóttir, Líndal noted, "Mrs. Finnbogadóttir's wardrobe always required unique, well-crafted pieces that reflected her personality and international role. My work was never difficult—I was committed to working exclusively with fashion houses that shared my vision."

One of Líndal's most cherished creations was a blue silk Valentino dress worn by President Finnbogadóttir during her visit to King Carl Gustaf of Sweden, accompanied by a matching water silk cape. He also fondly remembered another silky rose-hued Valentino dress, which the president wore to Princess Diana and Prince Charles' wedding, paired with a handcrafted headpiece.

The collaboration between Hreinn Líndal and Vigdís Finnbogadóttir culminated in a deep, lasting friendship. "I feel a sense of warmth, gratitude, and respect for Mrs. Finnbogadóttir," Líndal reflected, "who inspired loyalty and shared her genuine spirit during our collaborative years."

Over the course of her presidency, President Finnbogadóttir became a global symbol of strength and dignity. Líndal believed that dignified attire played a crucial role in upholding that image, affirming, "Whether as a national leader or a citizen, it's essential to dress with dignity—both as a sign of respect for others and for oneself."

Looking back on the fashion landscape of that era, Líndal pondered, "Respect sometimes seems to be waning today. Perhaps all the men in Alþingi [Iceland's parliament] should wear ties to show their commitment to their roles and the people they represent."

Retaining a well-kept wardrobe, Líndal continued to embody his personal style, cultivated over years of working in the fashion industry. "I've never been one to chase trends," he admitted, "keeping true to myself and trusting that a well-crafted garment will always endure."
