Images show growing remembrance sites at Puente de la Concordia; individuals pay tribute to the fallen
On September 17, 2025, a poignant gathering took place at Puente de la Concordia, with attendees hailing from Mexico City and the State of Mexico. The event, which was not described as a formal ceremony or service, seemed to be a heartfelt tribute to honour and remember the victims of a gas pipeline explosion that occurred in the Iztapalapa borough just a week prior.
Photos captured by Carlos Mejía depict the sombre scene, with trees transformed into improvised altars, adorned with candles and flowers. One of these altars bore a proud display of a Mexican flag, a poignant symbol of patriotism and remembrance during patriotic holidays.
Neighbours flocked to these makeshift memorials, leaving tokens of their sympathy and respect for the deceased. Víctor López, a resident of Iztapalapa, was among those present. He took the opportunity to call for a review of safety measures, expressing a desire to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The tragic incident involving a tanker truck at the gas pipeline in Iztapalapa had shaken the community, leaving many in mourning. The gathering at Puente de la Concordia was a powerful testament to the resilience and solidarity of the people, as they came together to pay their respects and keep the memory of the victims alive.
