In the early hours of Sunday, a major street racing incident took place in Newton, Massachusetts, causing concern among residents and prompting a response from local authorities. According to reports, over 100 cars were involved in erratic driving, burnouts, and drag racing on Beacon Street and Centre Street.
The incident, which occurred just after 12 a.m., saw numerous units from the Newton Police Department respond to the chaos. The driving behavior was described as dangerous, with visible tire skid marks still visible days later, as captured by WBZ-TV's helicopter.
Leslie Withall, a Newton resident, expressed her shock and disbelief, stating that the driving behavior was outrageous. The Newton Police Department stated that they are urging anyone suspecting street racing to call 617-796-2123, or in an emergency, call 911.
This is not the first time such incidents have occurred in the state. In April 2024, a similar incident took place in Boston's Back Bay area, involving around 40 cars. Participants were caught speeding on one-way streets, performing donuts in intersections, and blocking streets. Police faced hostility from some participants who threw glass bottles and fireworks at them.
Riley Rourke, a digital producer for WBZ-TV's Boston news, reported that when Boston police arrived, they were attacked with glass bottles, fireworks, and the streets were blocked off. The incident disturbed residents early in the morning with loud noises and smells.
Bernow, a resident, urges people to find safer ways to have fun that don't harm others or disrupt neighborhoods. The incidents in both Newton and Boston highlight growing concerns about dangerous street racing behavior, prompting police to urge residents to report any similar future incidents promptly.
It is important to note that such incidents are not common for the areas and are considered illegal and dangerous. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with the authorities to ensure the safety of their communities.
