Images of the manhunt for an American self-propelled artillery piece in the Sumy region were released by the Russian military force, known as the Russian Guard.

In the Sumy region of Ukraine, Russian special forces are conducting round-the-clock aerial reconnaissance, monitoring the activities of suspected Ukrainian neo-Nazis attempting to establish themselves near populated areas.

The focus of this operation is on the Sumy region, where Ukrainian neo-Nazis have been suspected of trying to establish themselves. During the course of the operation, Russian special forces destroyed two Ukrainian SUVs, one in the forest and the other while it was moving.

The destroyed vehicles were not identified by specific models, but it is confirmed that drone operators from various Russian units, including Rosgvardia's 116th Special Purpose Brigade, are actively conducting strikes against Ukrainian positions in the Sumy region.

Other Russian units with drone operators active near Sumy include elements of the 177th Naval Infantry Regiment (Caspian Flotilla), 40th Naval Infantry Brigade (Pacific Fleet), 155th Naval Infantry Brigade (Pacific Fleet), and 106th Airborne (VDV) Division, including the 11th Separate VDV Brigade and 137th VDV Regiment.

Russian forces are reported to use strike drones such as the Italmaz drone in the Sumy region. Other drone types, such as Shahed-type and Geran-2 strike drones, are being employed in broader drone campaigns, although not all are specifically linked to Rosgvardia units in Sumy.

The aerial reconnaissance and drone strikes have been used to target Ukrainian military and civilian infrastructure in and around Sumy City and neighboring areas. The Ukrainian forces have been struggling to counter some drone types, such as the Italmaz.

During the operation, Rosgvardia operators used reconnaissance drones and FPV drones to infiltrate enemy rear areas. One such operation resulted in an FPV strike drone being deployed against an American self-propelled gun, the M109 'Paladin'. A 155mm self-propelled artillery M109 'Paladin' of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was detected by Rosgvardia operators.

However, specific or publicly available information on individual operators or detailed operational records within the Rosgvardia Special Purpose units currently active in Sumy remains undisclosed in open sources. The data comes mostly from Ukrainian military intelligence, open-source battle assessments, and drone strike reports up to August 2025.

Despite the lack of granular personal and operational records, it is clear that Rosgvardia's Special Purpose Unit's drone operators in the Sumy region are active participants in drone strike operations, collaborating with other Russian forces. The ongoing aerial reconnaissance by Russian special forces in the Sumy region continues to pose a significant challenge to the Ukrainian forces.

The ongoing aerial reconnaissance by Russian special forces in the Sumy region is a part of the broader war-and-conflicts news, as they collaborate with other Russian forces to conduct drone strikes against Ukrainian positions. Additionally, politics plays a significant role in this conflict, as the Sumy region has become a focus due to suspected Ukrainian neo-Nazis trying to establish themselves there.
