The much-anticipated summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2025, ended without a ceasefire agreement or any deal regarding Ukraine.

Despite nearly three hours of talks, the meeting did not halt Russia's ongoing military assault on Ukraine, and Russian forces even attacked Ukraine during the discussions. Trump expressed that "We didn’t get there," confirming the failure to achieve a ceasefire or pause in hostilities.

Both leaders hinted at future meetings, possibly in Moscow, but made no firm commitments or concrete progress. The joint statement was made in front of the slogan "Pursuing Peace," yet it seemed that the summit underscored the difficulty of negotiating a peace process without Ukraine’s direct involvement and exposed deep divisions on possible terms.

Trump had intended to pressure Putin into a ceasefire deal and hoped to build a framework that could also involve Ukraine and NATO allies later. However, Putin remained intransigent on critical issues, including his war aims. Experts noted Putin stalled without offering real concessions, and the summit revealed no breakthrough on ending the conflict.

The U.S. President, Donald Trump, granted state legitimacy to Vladimir Putin, a head of state accused by the West of being a warmonger. Trump seemed unusually restrained and pale during the summit. Putin appeared to have dominated the press room during the summit, with Trump's supporters expecting some results, as he had previously boasted he could end the Ukraine war within 24 hours.

However, Trump did not mention the word "ceasefire," despite it being a main point demanded by Kyiv and European allies. Moreover, he did not announce any new tariffs against Russia or its trading partners. Trump offered Putin a meeting on American soil, and Putin joked about potentially continuing his trusting exchange with Trump in Moscow during their next meeting.

The Alaska summit between Putin and Trump did not produce any outcome advancing a ceasefire or peace in Ukraine. The summit's failure to achieve a resolution to the conflict raises questions about the future of US-Russia relations and the possibility of a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
