Gazan Protests and Arrests Raise International Concerns

New photos and videos have surfaced, showing Israeli soldiers arresting dozens of civilians in the Gaza Strip. Some of the detainees were identified by fellow workers, family members, or colleagues to be ordinary civilians with no known militant ties.

Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Watch published images of the arrests and declared in a statement that Israeli forces detained and severely mistreated numerous Palestinian civilians. The organization reported receiving reports of widespread, arbitrary arrests and detentions by the Israeli military, including medical professionals, academics, journalists, and older individuals.

No official comment has been made by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) regarding the accusations. However, certain Israeli media sources have described the images as surrender gestures by Hamas members.

Reportedly, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, a regional news outlet, reported the arrest of one of their correspondents and several relatives at the Market Street in Beit Lahia. According to eye-witness accounts, Israeli forces forced the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip to remove their clothing and submitted them to humiliating searches, during the arrest process. Various videos and images circulated on social media showing soldiers using harsh, degrading methods to apprehend residents.

Hussam Kanafani, the editor-in-chief of Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, stated in a statement that the detained journalist and their family members are still missing. "We will make every effort and collaborate with international institutions and organizations devoted to defending journalists' rights and freedoms worldwide," he emphasized.

CNN spoke to a relative of one of the arrestees living in the United States, Hani al-Madhoun. Al-Madhoun informed CNN that Israeli soldiers approached the street and requested all men to come out. "This house was their sanctuary, after two of our homes were destroyed," he explained.

He also mentioned recognizing his cousin Abboud in one of the photos and spotting his brother Mahmoud in a video. Mahmood was the owner of a small market, and Abboud was a construction worker who helped his father with building projects.

Background

The current situation in the Middle East has once again come under international scrutiny as the images have sparked international concern. The World Health Organization has voiced concerns over the impact of arrests on healthcare provision in Gaza, while human rights organizations accuse Israel of violating international humanitarian law.
