Mexico's President Sheinbaum Stands Firm on Maya Train, DEA, and Euthanasia

In a recent press conference at the National Palace, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo addressed several contentious issues that have been making headlines in Mexico.

Regarding the Maya Train project, President Sheinbaum expressed her continued support for the expansion of the train line, emphasising its importance as a strategic infrastructure and economic development asset for Mexico and Central America. She also highlighted the project's focus on sustainable development and ensuring that the train does not cut through protected environmental areas.

However, the President faced criticism over a recent incident on the Maya Train track, which she accused her opponents of exploiting on social media. Oscar David Lozano Aguilar, General Director of the Maya Train, clarified that the incident involving trains 304 and 307 at Izamal station was caused by an anomaly that led to a change in track, resulting in a road incident, not a derailment. Lozano announced an investigation by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) into the matter.

On the issue of U.S. military intervention in Mexico, President Sheinbaum reiterated her stance of preserving Mexico's sovereignty. She firmly rejected any U.S. military presence or operations in Mexico, including those by the DEA. She emphasised Mexico's right to address its internal security without foreign military presence, a position that contrasts with some political opponents who favour deeper U.S. involvement in cartel-related security issues.

Despite the controversy surrounding the Maya Train and U.S. military intervention, President Sheinbaum remains undeterred. She is actively involved in discussions with Guatemala and Belize about extending the Maya Train route and expects a meeting with Marco Rubio to close a security agreement.

However, there is no public information found about Claudia Sheinbaum's stance on euthanasia or related legislation.

In other news, President Sheinbaum is awaiting the arrivals of Macron and Carney, and Efraín Morales, head of the National Water Commission (Conagua), presented advances of the National Field Technification Program and recognised military engineers for their collaboration in tasks to ensure the human right to water.

CIBanco has the right to file a lawsuit against the U.S. Treasury Department, and insurance will have to be made effective due to the Maya Train track incident.
