"Is your father still alive?" I asked.
Allan shook his head. "He wanted to express that there seemed to be a neurological event or something like it in his eye," he said. "One eye is weaker than the other and he suggested considering it like a scar, because it makes you unique. If you think about it, with such a physical disability and yet being such a handsome man, he has more strength."
I told him that my father was born with oculogenic myasthenia gravis, a condition that degenerates or weakens the eye muscles, and I'd always hoped he'd never be bullied or ridiculed because of it.
"His physical self will never define him, and you shouldn't focus on it anymore," Allan said.
I was touched, but also puzzled by how Allan knew these details about my father. He also shared information about the location of my wedding and my daughter's love for music, among other things.
If Allan didn't have access to my father's medical records, I didn't quite know how he'd come by all this information. I figure some people are just attuned to a higher frequency.
Maybe it's the holidays or today's the anniversary of my father's birthday – or maybe I just needed some comfort. I can only say that I'm no longer a skeptic.
