I'm filing a lawsuit against the chancellor due to his allegedly offensive remark.
The informal banter between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and TV host Diana Zimmermann about Israel's actions against Iran has sparked a furor, leading to a criminal complaint. Diether Dehm, Ex-MP of the Left, reportedly filed this complaint with the Federal Prosecutor General and the Public Prosecutor's Office in Berlin, along with about 20 signatories, including comedian Dieter Hallervorden. As reported by German Press Agency, this news was also featured in the "Berliner Zeitung."
In a chatty ZDF interview, Merz seized on Zimmermann's use of the term "dirty work" to describe Israel's war against Iran, responding with, "Mrs. Zimmermann, I am grateful to you for the term 'dirty work'. That's the dirty work Israel is doing for us all. We are also affected by this regime. This regime has brought death and destruction to the world." Dehm accused Merz of committing a crime, even though the statement was made outside of Germany during the G7 summit in Canada. Dehm argued that Merz breached Article 26 of the Basic Law, which prohibits actions that could disturb the peaceful coexistence of peoples.
The alleged infraction stems from Article 26 of the Basic Law, a section that outlaws acts of aggression that threaten peace or prepare for war. Critics claim that Merz's remarks could encourage war propaganda among Germans, although the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe remains silent on the matter, and the Public Prosecutor's Office in Berlin has yet to confirm the receipt of the complaint.
Hallervorden made waves earlier in April 2024 with a thought-provoking video about Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza. In this video, he delved into the themes of apartheid, genocide, and called for a ceasefire and the release of hostages. This video received backlash from the Central Council of Jews and others. Co-written by ex-MP Dehm, the video propelled Hallervorden into the spotlight as a comedian and actor on film and television, as well as the director of Schlosstheater in Berlin.
