Illinois legislators and proponents seek to bolster the horse racing sector and racinos within the state.
Revitalization of Horse Racing Industry in Illinois Gains Momentum
In the latter stages of the legislative session, proponents of horse racing are aggressively promoting measures to rejuvenate the struggling equestrian industry in Illinois, along with its associated horse bettings.
Local authorities from Decatur and Illinois horse racing advocates have joined forces with Senator Patrick Joyce, a Democrat representing Essex, in an ongoing crusade to persuade lawmakers to endorse legislation that aims to breathe life into a long-stalled south suburban racino and pave the way for a novel racetrack and gaming venue in Decatur.
Senator Joyce's bill, Senate Bill 1473, seeks to annul a portion of a 2019 law that granted Hawthorne Race Course, a gambling facility in Stickney, the power to block any racecourse developments within a 35-mile radius of their suburban Chicago location.
The progress of the legislation remains uncertain, as it must first secure approval from lawmakers. Furthermore, another proposed bill allows underperforming casinos to relocate, which could potentially influence plans regarding Decatur.
Horse racing advocates are vigorously championing these initiatives in an attempt to revitalize the industry in Illinois. The fate of these legislative proposals will determine the future vigor of horse racing and horse betting in the state.
To further invigorate the horse racing industry in Illinois, Senator Joyce's bill aims to revoke a portion of the 2019 law that restricts racecourse developments within 35 miles of Hawthorne Race Course. Simultaneously, there's another proposal allowing struggling casinos to relocate, potentially leading to a novel racetrack and gaming venue in Decatur, thereby diversifying sports offerings and contributing to the racing industry.
