Illegal beet pulp dump threatens Nizhny Novgorod farmland and environment

Inspectors from Rosselkhoznadzor have uncovered an illegal waste dump in the Sergach District of Nizhny Novgorod Region. The site, covering over 15 hectares in Krasnaya Pustyn village, contains beet pulp waste from sugar processing. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the violation of agricultural land regulations. The dumping ground was found outside approved disposal areas, breaching land use rules. Agrofirma Nizhegorodskaya LLC, the company responsible, neglected soil protection measures, leaving the land vulnerable to erosion, waterlogging, and contamination.

On March 31, an administrative case was opened against both the landowner and tenant. Officials ordered the company to remove the waste and restore the site by May 22. No similar cases involving sugarcane byproducts have been recorded in the region over the past five years. Sugarcane is not grown in Nizhny Novgorod, and no reports of such incidents exist in public records.

The illegal dumping has led to environmental risks, including soil degradation and pollution. Agrofirma Nizhegorodskaya LLC now faces a deadline to clean up the site and repair the damage. Failure to comply could result in further penalties under agricultural and environmental laws.
