Ildar Abdrazakov named new artistic director of Mikhailovsky Theatre
The Mikhailovsky Theatre has appointed renowned opera singer Ildar Abdrazakov as its new artistic director. His tenure begins in March 2026, following the departure of Vladimir Kekhman. The theatre, known for staging 365 performances annually, now looks to Abdrazakov's leadership for its next chapter.
Vladimir Kekhman left his role as general director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre in January 2026. Alexander Solovyov briefly took over as acting artistic director before Abdrazakov's appointment. Kekhman had previously been dismissed from his position at Moscow's Gorky Art Theatre in September 2025.
Abdrazakov brings extensive experience to the role. A celebrated bass and People's Artist of Russia, he remains a leading soloist at both the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theatres. Since December 2024, he has also served as artistic director of the Sevastopol State Opera and Ballet Theatre. In his first months at the Mikhailovsky, Abdrazakov has not announced major shifts in artistic direction. Instead, he plans to uphold the theatre's traditions while introducing new talent. Collaboration with the Sevastopol Opera and Ballet Theatre is also expected. Beyond his stage career, Abdrazakov holds a seat on Russia's Presidential Council for Culture and Art.
The Mikhailovsky Theatre now operates under Abdrazakov's guidance, with a focus on tradition and fresh collaborations. His dual role in Sevastopol and his ongoing performances at top Russian theatres add to his influence. The coming seasons will reveal how his leadership shapes the institution's future.
