Ilaiyaraaja's music-featuring film "Good Bad Ugly," starring Ajith Kumar, has been removed from Netflix, compliance with a court order citing unauthorized use of the composer's songs.
In a surprising turn of events, the action-thriller film "Good Bad Ugly" has been taken down from Netflix following a court order. The order, issued by Justice N Senthilkumar, barred producers Mythri Movie Makers from exhibiting the film with three songs by renowned composer Ilaiyaraaja, who has taken legal action against the producers for using his songs without permission.
Ilaiyaraaja, a Padma Vibhushan awardee, demanded a compensation of Rs 5 crore and asked for the songs to be removed. The infringement involves three songs from the composer's vast repertoire, which were used in the production of Good Bad Ugly without his permission or consent.
Despite the removal from Netflix, the film's box office performance remains unaffected. Released theatrically in April, Good Bad Ugly collected almost Rs 250 crore worldwide, performing well at the box office. Its digital premiere on Netflix on May 8 was a significant milestone for the film.
Interestingly, there are ongoing talks between lead actor Ajith Kumar and KGF director Prasanth Neel for a potential collaboration on two films. However, neither Ajith Kumar nor Prasanth Neel have confirmed the collaboration publicly, and the details of the collaboration are not yet disclosed.
Yalamanchili Ravi Shankar, producer of Mythri Movie Makers, stated that they have taken permission from all necessary music labels for the songs used in the film. The music labels hold the rights to the songs, and Mythri Movie Makers have followed protocol and obtained NOCs from them.
Netflix has not yet released an official statement regarding the removal of the film. The removal does not affect the films' box office performance or its collection of almost Rs 250 crore worldwide.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of obtaining proper permissions and respecting the rights of artists in the film industry. Ilaiyaraaja, with his extensive career and numerous accolades, continues to be a significant figure in the industry, and his work is valued and protected.
