Titled Pianist Igor Levit Tackles Anti-Semitism with Charity Album

In a heartfelt response to global anti-Semitism upsurge, Berlin-based pianist Igor Levit released an album on December 15. The artist seemed to find solace in both action and purpose amidst his grief.

"Despair has been my constant companion the past couple of months, following the Hamas massacre on October 7," Levit shared with German Press Agency, exuding vulnerability. "But I'm aiming to transform this sorrow into assistance. I'm taking action and finding meaning through these actions."

The album, available for download and streaming exclusively, carries the title "Mendelssohn: Lieder ohne Worte." Featuring Felix Mendelssohn's renowned "Songs without Words" and a captivating prelude by Charles-Valentin Alkan, it aims to raise funds for two organizations dedicated to combating anti-Semitism: Ofek, a counseling center for anti-Semitic violence and discrimination, and the Kreuzberg Initiative against Anti-Semitism.

Despite the emotional turmoil, music remained Levit's source of comfort. "The melancholy in these songs has resonated with me during these trying times, and I find solace in playing them affiliated," he shared.
