Russia's Supreme Court Chair Position Set to be Filled with Igor Krasnov

After a series of events, it appears that Igor Krasnov is set to take over as the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Russia. The Higher Qualifications Collegium of Judges (HQCJ) recommended Krasnov for the position on September 15.

The Supreme Court Chair position became vacant following the death of Irina Podnosova in April 2024. Krasnov, who submitted his application for the position on August 25, was the sole candidate for the role.

Following the HQCJ's recommendation, Krasnov's name was forwarded to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that the president would submit Krasnov's candidacy to the Federation Council 'in the shortest possible time'.

The appointment of the Supreme Court Chair requires approval by the Federation Council upon the president's recommendation. However, no information was provided about the timeline for the Federation Council's decision on Krasnov's appointment.

In the interim, Yuri Ivanenko has been acting as the Supreme Court Chair. Krasnov was officially introduced as the chairman of the Supreme Court of Russia on January 21, 2020, following his recommendation by the Russian president to the Constitutional Court commission.

As the process moves forward, the Russian legal community and the public will be closely watching to see if Krasnov's appointment will be approved by the Federation Council. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
