Trade Union Boss Zitzelsberger Steps Down after Decade in Charge

Roman Zitzelsberger, the influential chief of IG Metall's district in Baden-Württemberg, has announced his departure after a decade in the role. He shared the news at the Grand Collective Bargaining Commission meeting in Pforzheim, attended by around 250 trade union activists.

Since taking over from Jörg Hofmann in 2013, Zitzelsberger has made notable contributions to IG Metall, including negotiating several nationwide pilot agreements in the metal and electrical industry. Previously discussed as a potential national head of the union, Zitzelsberger instead decided to stay as district manager, citing health concerns. Benner was subsequently appointed as First Chairwoman in October.

Now, having regained his strength following a period of introspection, Zitzelsberger is eager to embark on new ventures. He intends to vacate his position by March 31, initiating a search for his replacement in timely fashion, ahead of the heated collective bargaining round scheduled for 2024.

During his tenure, Zitzelsberger considerably influenced the collective bargaining policies within the Metal industry. His collaborative endeavors with peers such as Christiane Benner have left an indelible mark on IG Metall's trajectory.

Boss Benner lauded Zitzelsberger's impressive 10-year career and expressed regret at his decision to step down. She described him as an influential presence at all levels within IG Metall, a powerful advocate for collective bargaining policy, and a reliable ally.
