The AfD party's grip tightens in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt, with the 2026 state election just around the corner. Minister President Haseloff issues a stark warning against an AfD election triumph, stating that he might even decamp if it transpires, stating the atmosphere would be "unbearable."

Saxony-Anhalt's Minister President, Reiner Haseloff, is pondering relocating out of state if the AfD emerges victorious in the 2026 state election. "If the AfD snagged the top spot, then the real question for me would be whether I'd stick around in my hometown after 72 years," Haseloff laid open to the "Bild" rag. For him, that'd be an "intolerable atmosphere."

Political Clash Haseloff: "Why the Hell Not Me!" Furious Minister President Clashes with AfD The same question would ring true for his old lady and many in his inner circle, he reckoned. He wouldn't need bugger off overseas, Haseloff shared with "Bild," as he's got family scattered across Germany. At times, while listening to AfD blabbermouths in the state parliament, arms a-cross, eyes shut tight, he reckons he's "in the final phase of the Weimar Republic in the Reichstag" or "later" in the Berlin "Sportpalast," where Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda minister, declared "total f***ing war" in 1943.

The election for a new state parliament in Saxony-Anhalt takes place on September 6, 2026. Haseloff's been roosted in the big chair since 2011, leading a coalition of CDU, SPD, and FDP. Haseloff revealed to "Bild" that the jewel in the CDU's crown as its top candidate for the state election campaign will be displayed in a jiffy. His one and only wish is, "May it never transpire that an AfD parks their seezer on the government benches and what they trumpet in their booklet ever comes to fruition." Prevention is key. "Everything takes a backseat to that." In his eyes, East Germans harbor a low degree of party loyalty. If someone can salespitch, a chunk of the AfD electorate can be wooed back.

He's all for turning away asylum seekers at the borders. "A nation must retain the means to guard its border, even by our Constitution," Haseloff told the "Bild" rag. If courts put a stop on these turnaways due to legalities, politics retains "all possibilities" to "tweak the existing law to ensure we adhere to all principles and all articles of our Constitution - also of the European treaties," the CDU honcho added. Such measures are imperative to thwart the strengthening of the extreme fringes. Haseloff flags: "In Saxony, in Thuringia, in Brandenburg, there are no absolute majorities of the democratic center anymore."
