IEBC Launches Mass Registration Drive Aiming for 6 Million New Voters by 2027
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of Kenya has initiated a nationwide mass registration drive, aiming to add six million new voters, predominantly young people, to the register ahead of the 2027 general election. The Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise began on September 29, 2025, with the goal of registering at least 10% of the targeted new voters before the polls.
The IEBC's ambitious plan is to increase the voter register from the current 22 million to 28 million. This will be achieved through two enhanced CVR phases. The first phase, immediately after the November 27 by-elections, targets an additional 40% of the six million new voters. The second phase, in the 2025/2026 financial year, aims to register another three million voters.
Experts have advised the IEBC to leverage technology and targeted civic education to engage Generation Z (Gen Z) Kenyans in the voting process. They believe this will be crucial in driving the high registration targets. Kenyans are encouraged to visit IEBC constituency offices and Huduma Centres to update, verify, or transfer their voter details, or register as new voters.
The success of the CVR exercise is vital for the IEBC to meet its target of 28 million voters for the 2027 general elections. However, a low turnout on the first day has raised concerns about young voters' participation. The IEBC and stakeholders must work together to ensure the registration drive reaches and engages the targeted youth population.
