Disaster in Ahmedabad: Air India Flight Crash Claims Lives of 240, One Survivor Miraculously alive

Identified travelers aboard the Air India plane that met misfortune in Ahmedabad.

In a heart-wrenching incident, Air India Flight AI 171, bound for London, crashed 33 seconds after take-off from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday. The tragedy left 240 souls, including the flight crew, in its wake, with one survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British citizen of Indian descent, miraculously managing to cling to life.

The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, collided with a doctors' hostel in Ahmedabad's Meghani Nagar area at 1:39 pm, reducing the building to rubble and sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

Among the deceased were several notable individuals, including former Gujarat chief minister, Vijay Rupani. Other victims included a couple heading for a UK holiday, two siblings on a summer trip, and a family of five who were capturing a selfie just before the disaster. Two young British nationals, who had just concluded an enchanting tour of India, also perished in the crash.

The list of passengers onboard the ill-fated flight reveals an assortment of nationalities, though details about the specific number for each are scarce. Among the 169 Indian passengers, several common names stand out, such as Rupani, Patel, and Shah. The 53 British passengers include individuals like Amin, Brahmbhatt, and Taju, with Vishwash Kumar Ramesh being the sole survivor. Seven Portuguese individuals and one Canadian are also reported to have been onboard.

As the world grieves the loss and prays for the lone survivor, the Tata Group, owners of Air India, have announced a compensation of ₹1 crore for each family affected by the crash. Investigation teams from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) have been dispatched to determine the cause of the tragic accident. The black box has been recovered, and preliminary findings are being awaited.
