Identified by the New York Coroner's Office: Three Additional 9/11 Victims

Three More Victims of the 9/11 Attacks Identified

After a year without any new identifications, three more victims of the 9/11 attacks have been identified. The newly identified victims are Ryan Fitzgerald from Floral Park, New York, Barbara Keating from Palm Springs, California, and an unnamed woman.

The medical examiner's office reports that approximately 1,100 victims of the attacks remain unidentified, despite ongoing efforts to identify more using advanced DNA analysis. The difficulties in identification persist due to the scale of destruction, mixing of remains, and the passage of time, which can degrade biological material.

The identifications were made through family outreach and advanced DNA analysis. Dr. Jason Graham, the chief medical examiner, stated that each new identification is a testament to the promise of science and sustained outreach to families.

Barbara Keating and the unnamed woman's remains were recovered in 2001, while Ryan Fitzgerald's remains were recovered in 2002. The newly identified victims are the 1,651st, 1,652nd, and 1,653rd victims to be identified in the attacks.

The 9/11 attacks resulted in nearly 3,000 deaths. Of these, 2,753 deaths occurred in New York City. The attacks involved hijacked passenger planes that destroyed the twin towers at the World Trade Center, crashed into the Pentagon, and resulted in a crash in Pennsylvania (United Airlines Flight 93).

The names of Barbara Keating and Ryan Fitzgerald, two of the newly identified 9/11 victims, are inscribed at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City. The unnamed woman's identity is being withheld at her family's request.

Dr. Graham emphasised that the commitment to identify the missing and return them to their loved ones remains strong. He stated that each new identification brings a sense of closure to the families and serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to identify and honour the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

The identifications of Ryan Fitzgerald, Barbara Keating, and an unnamed woman are significant additions to the ongoing efforts in the field of general-news and politics, as they bring the known number of victims identified from the 9/11 attacks to 1,653. Despite the passage of time and challenges such as the scale of destruction, mixing of remains, and degradation of biological material, the New York City medical examiner's office continues to persist with advanced DNA analysis to identify the approximately 1,100 remaining unidentified victims.
