Frost and Glaze - Wintery Outlooks for Germany - Icy roads spark travel chaos as Germany braces for a treacherous weekend
Freezing temperatures and slippery roads have caused travel chaos across Germany this weekend. While most regions avoided serious accidents, icy conditions led to multiple incidents in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The German Weather Service (DWD) warned of persistent icy conditions, particularly in western, southwestern, and coastal areas. Sleet and snow showers are making roads treacherous in regions like Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, and along the Baltic Sea. In the Alps and their southern foothills, light snowfall could bring up to 10 centimetres of fresh snow.
The icy spell is set to continue through the weekend, keeping roads hazardous in many areas. Authorities urge drivers to slow down and exercise caution, especially in regions where snow and sleet are forecast. A gradual rise in temperatures is expected only by the start of next week.
