Icy Roads Cause Three-Vehicle Crash in Steinfeld's Schemde District
A serious traffic accident occurred on Dammer Straße in Steinfeld's Schemde district on Saturday, February 2, 2026. Three people were injured when a 63-year-old driver lost control of her car due to icy conditions. Emergency crews quickly arrived at the scene, closing the road for nearly two hours as they responded.
The crash happened during harsh winter weather. In the days leading up to the accident, temperatures in the Steinfeld region had dropped as low as -7°C at night, with daytime highs barely reaching 0°C. Forecasters had issued warnings for black ice, slippery roads, and strong easterly gusts, with snow expected by mid-afternoon on February 2.
At the time of the incident, the 63-year-old driver from Peine lost control of her vehicle after hitting snowdrifts and patches of ice. Her car then collided with another vehicle, driven by a 25-year-old woman from Vechta, who suffered serious injuries. A 48-year-old man from Damme was also caught up in the accident, though his injuries were minor.
All three individuals were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The estimated cost of the damage from the crash runs into the high five-figure range.
The road remained closed for around two hours while emergency services cleared the scene. Authorities have not yet released further details on the condition of those injured. Investigations into the exact cause of the accident are expected to continue.
