Icy A27 motorway crash leaves two injured after van skids off road

A traffic accident on the A27 motorway near Verden left two people injured on Wednesday morning. The crash happened between the Walsrode-West and Verden-Ost junctions as icy conditions caused a van to skid off the road. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene.

The incident involved a 41-year-old driver of a Mercedes Sprinter, who lost control on the icy surface. The vehicle veered off the carriageway, rolling onto its passenger side in the embankment. Both the driver and a 39-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries and were taken to General Hospital for treatment.

The van was severely damaged and could not be driven away. A tow truck was called to recover it, while the motorway was temporarily closed in both directions. Crews used the closure to carry out de-icing work on the affected stretch.

Police in Verden District reported a total of 12 weather-related accidents that same day. By midday, nine additional incidents—all causing only property damage—had been recorded. The estimated cost of the Sprinter crash alone stands at around €9,000.

The A27 has since reopened, but authorities have warned drivers to remain cautious due to lingering icy patches. The two injured individuals received medical attention, though neither required further hospital care. Police continue to monitor road conditions as winter weather persists in the region.
