Iconic musician Brian Wilson, a key figure in the formation of The Beach Boys, passes away.
The Beach Boys' Co-Founder, Visionary Brian Wilson, Signs Off at 82
Buckle up, folks, we're diving into the sad but significant news: Brian Wilson, the co-founder of The Beach Boys and the mastermind behind some of your favorite summer tunes, has taken his final wave at the age of 82.
In a heartbreaking statement on their website, Wilson's family broke the news: "We're finding it hard to find the right words right now. Rest assured, we're grieving just like the rest of the world. So, please give us some space to cope, dear fans."
The rumors surrounding Wilson's health were unfortunately true, with court documents from 2024 revealing that he was fighting a major neurocognitive disorder, like dementia.
Born in 1942, Brian co-founded The Beach Boys alongside his brothers Dennis and Carl, cousin Mike Love, and buddy Al Jardine in the early '60s. As the eldest and last surviving brother, Wilson was the driving force behind the band, penning hits like "Surfin' USA," "Good Vibrations," and the heart-melting "God Only Knows."
Leaving Behind a Powerful Legacy
A host of A-listers have paid their respects to the late genius. Rolling Stone's Ronnie Wood said his world was "in mourning" following the deaths of Wilson and his fellow musician, Sly Stone. "So sad," Wood added. Piers Morgan, writing on Twitter, hailed Wilson as a "complex man, but a musical genius and showbiz icon," adding, "what a legacy he leaves."
Radio 2 DJ Tony Robinson grieved: "So sorry to hear that Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys has passed away. So many hits, and to me, it was the sound of summer. RIP Brian, and thanks for the music."
Electronic music duo Disclosure called Wilson their "favorite producer and composer of all time" in a touching Instagram post and shared: "Pushed the boundaries further than anyone had before. We're lost for words. Rest in peace, Brian. You're the greatest."

Let me tell ya, my life wouldn't have been the same without Brian Wilson looming large. My music-loving dad was a die-hard Beach Boys fan, naming one of my brothers after one of them and blasting their tracks throughout our childhood.
Other kids might have scoffed at choosing America's Beach Boys over our home-grown Beatles, but Dad always defended them, waxing lyrical about Wilson's harmonies and the creative genius of The Beach Boys.
But their influence didn't stop there. The Beach Boys' music left an indelible mark on the world. Their album, Pet Sounds, is widely acclaimed as one of the most influential records ever, brimming with unique harmonies and revolutionary production techniques.
They also paved the way for musicians, giving them more creative control. Thanks to Brian, it became the norm for American rock bands to play their own instruments and write their own songs.
So, whether you're aware of it or not, The Beach Boys and their music have found their way into your life too. From the likes of Sir Elton John and Bruce Springsteen to Carole King, the praise for their work is endless.
Between Pet Sounds being ranked No.2 on a 2003 Rolling Stone list of the best 500 albums (behind only The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band) and the fact that Paul McCartney has named "God Only Knows" as one of his favorite songs and always finds it emotional (make sure you have a box of tissues handy), it's clear that Wilson and The Beach Boys have left an everlasting impact on music history.
The troubled backstory of the band couldn't overshadow their innocent appeal. Brian, grappling with stress and fatigue, took a step back from touring in 1964 to focus on writing and recording. Tragically, Dennis died in 1983 after a battle with substance abuse, and Carl succumbed to lung cancer in 1998. Through it all, their infectious music continues to bring joy and memories to fans worldwide.
