Iconic Film Characters - Ellen Ripley, Snake Plissken, and Neo, Honored with Long-Awaited Collectible Trading Cards
Artist Cuyler Smith is set to release three new cards in his Trading Cards series, themed around science fiction. The new cards will be available for purchase at Gallery1988.com on Thursday, September 7.
Smith, known for his innovative designs, has created 250 cards in his Trading Cards series so far, with the upcoming release marking the 250th card. The artist expressed gratitude towards Gallery 1988 for their continuous support in his project.
One of the most anticipated cards in the new series is the Neo card. Smith had previously attempted to create a Neo card but was not satisfied with the initial design. However, this time, he was inspired by the visual impact of the movie The Matrix, and the new Neo card features a transition from Neo to the One, complete with the code of The Matrix in 3D depth.
In addition to the Neo card, two other cards are based on science fiction movies. One features Snake from Escape From LA ready to play basketball, while the other depicts Ripley from Alien Resurrection in a similar setting.
A limited number of matching sets of the new cards will be available for $75. Furthermore, some of Smith's older sci-fi cards have been pulled from the archives and will also be available for purchase.
Each new card costs $25, making it an affordable addition for collectors and fans of the artist's work. Smith has also stated his intentions to continue growing and evolving the Trading Cards series in the future.
While the Trading Cards series is primarily known for its characters from sports movies and TV shows, the new science fiction-themed cards mark a departure from the norm. However, for those looking for examples of sports in science fiction, popular franchises like "Rollerball" from the 1975 film of the same name or "Jai Alai" inspired sports in some speculative fiction could be a good starting point.
The new cards from Cuyler Smith's Trading Cards series promise to be a hit among collectors and fans of science fiction, and the upcoming release on September 7 is eagerly awaited.
Io9 and Gizmodo might cover the release of Cuyler Smith's 250th Trading Card, as the new series features science fiction-themed cards, including a Neo card inspired by The Matrix, Snake from Escape From LA playing basketball, and Ripley from Alien Resurrection in a similar setting. For future collectors, Gallery 1988 also plans to sell matching sets of these cards for $75, along with some older sci-fi cards from the archives.
