Museum Ship "Cap San Diego" Needs Donations for Shipyard - Iconic Cap San Diego Museum Ship Due for Major Overhaul in 2026

The Cap San Diego, Hamburg's iconic museum ship and one of the city's most beloved maritime landmarks, is set for a major overhaul. The 50-year-old vessel, owned by the Hamburg Admiralty Foundation, is due for its mandatory shipyard visit in March 2026. This routine inspection, akin to an MOT for vehicles, is crucial for the ship to continue its cruises along the Elbe, which it does several times a year, carrying up to 500 passengers.

The Cap San Diego Operating Company has launched an appeal for donations to help cover half of the seven-figure repair costs. The remaining 50 percent will be covered by donations, sales of Cap San Diego-branded merchandise, and in-kind contributions. The ship, built in 1962, is the last surviving vessel of a series of six identical general cargo ships. During its working life, it transported goods such as cars and machinery to South America and returned with coffee, oils, beef, and textiles.

The Cap San Diego is claimed to be the largest fully operational museum ship in the world. Its certification must be renewed every five years to ensure it can continue its cruises. The upcoming visit to the shipyard is part of this routine maintenance to keep the historic ship in top condition for its passengers.

The Cap San Diego's upcoming shipyard visit is a testament to the city's commitment to preserving its maritime history. With the help of donations and support from the public, the ship will continue to serve as a living museum and a symbol of Hamburg's seafaring past.
