Iconic Burj Al Arab closes for historic 18-month restoration in Dubai

Dubai's Burj Al Arab - the 202-suite icon that's often (incorrectly) dubbed the world's only 7-star hotel - has closed effective immediately, for a full restoration that will last roughly 18 months. This is the first comprehensive renovation in the property's 27-year history, remarkable given the activity it has seen over the decades.

Interior architect Tristan Auer will lead the project, with a mandate to preserve the property's cultural essence while modernizing select elements. Jumeirah CEO Thomas Meier framed it as a "thoughtful restoration" intended to "safeguard its legacy for generations to come."

The timing also looks strategic. With Dubai tourism down amid the ongoing regional conflict, the lost revenue from a shutdown is lower than usual. Expect a late 2027 reopening.

JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa Reopens for 2026 Season

JW Marriott's first Mediterranean property reopened on April 15 for its first full summer season after originally opening in mid-2025. The 160-key JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa sits above Marathi Bay, about 15 minutes from Chania (CHQ) airport, and leans into a slower, wellness-forward approach.

Its 4 restaurants - ̓nalos for seafood, Anoee for modern Cretan, Cuccagna for Italian, and Fayi for all-day Mediterranean - anchor the food and beverage offerings, alongside a bar collaboration with mixology group Soulshakers. Rooms, suites, and villas all face the Aegean, and the wellness setup includes a sea-view yoga deck, visiting practitioners, and spa rituals rooted in local traditions.

Rates start at $375 but easily climb to $530 this summer. With Marriott Bonvoy points, nights start at 65,600 points.

Hyatt Regency Denver Completes $70 Million Renovation

Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center has completed a $70 million room renovation to mark its 20-year anniversary. All 1,100 rooms were reworked under a "Slow and True" design philosophy, with natural wood, stone, porcelain, pleather, USB-C charging, and redesigned bathrooms.

The renovation also added Summit Five, an 891-square-foot meeting space on the fifth floor that flows out to the Denver City Terrace. Roughly 90% of the old furniture was resold, rather than trashed, and the new shower pans are each built from roughly 450 recycled plastic bottles.

Nights start at $385 or 12,000 World of Hyatt points.

Hyatt Centric Fisherman's Wharf San Francisco Reveals Redesign

Timed to Earth Month, Hyatt Centric Fisherman's Wharf San Francisco finished a multimillion-dollar refresh of its 316 rooms and 19,000+ square feet of meeting space. The property worked with MindClick to verify sustainability across every element, using low-VOC materials, Oeko-Tex- and Greenguard-certified fabrics, wool carpeting, and carpet padding made from repurposed construction waste.

Signature restaurant Brick & Beam features nautical and local touches, and the pool deck now includes a dedicated yoga area.

Nightly rates start at $219 or 12,000 World of Hyatt points.

Kimpton Signs Second Malaysian Property in Kota Kinabalu

IHG has signed Kimpton Kota Kinabalu, a 350-key beachfront resort on Tanjung Aru.

Slated for 2031, it will be the brand's second property in Malaysia after the recently opened Kimpton Naluria Kuala Lumpur. The hotel will offer direct beach access and views of both the South China Sea and Mount Kinabalu, plus the brand's usual spread of design-led social spaces, an all-day restaurant, a Beach Club, a speciality dining venue, pools, and wellness facilities. IHG says it plans to triple its Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio in Malaysia over the next few years.

Final Thoughts

Between a dramatic Dubai closure, a Malaysian beachfront signing, a Cretan reopening, and 2 U.S. renovations, this week captures the full range of where the hotel industry is investing lately: iconic preservation, luxury and lifestyle expansion, and sustainability-driven refreshes.

The Burj Al Arab news is the biggest element this week, and it'll be fascinating to see how Tristan Auer threads the needle between honoring the original and pulling it into the present.
