Ice skating at Bensberg rink temporarily suspended for school and club events.
The Bensberg ice sports hall has been closed indefinitely, affecting both school and club sports, following the discovery of static defects in the supporting structure last year. The city administration, in a bid to ensure safety, has not renewed the exception permit due to the lack of repairs or an expert report from the ice sports club responsible for maintenance, ESV Bergisch Gladbach e.V., also known as the 'RealStars'.
Last year, the city administration granted a one-time exception permit for one year, on the condition that the defects be eliminated under static expert supervision. However, the necessary repairs to the ceiling structure have not been carried out, and no certificate of approval from a state-recognised structural engineer has been provided.
The 'RealStars' are responsible for the unperformed repairs, and safe operation in the ice sports hall can no longer be guaranteed. The lower building authority has decided to suspend the use of the ice sports hall indefinitely until the ceiling structure is repaired or the load-bearing capacity is proven secure by an expert report.
The school committee announced the closure, and the city is currently in dialogue with the club to find a solution for continued operation. The city administration informed the ice sports club last year that they must either repair the ceiling structure or provide a report from an expert stating that the ceiling's load-bearing capacity is secure.
Despite the one-year exception permit having expired, the ice sports hall will remain closed until the necessary conditions are met. The city is seeking a solution with the club to ensure the safe operation of the ice sports hall for the benefit of the community.
