Ice Gliding's New Frontier: Delhi's Initial Global Ice Skating Rink Expected in Dwarka

The Capital's first international-standard ice-skating arena is being built in Dwarka's Sector 23, Delhi. The arena, a significant milestone for India's winter sports infrastructure, is being developed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The upcoming ice-skating arena, set to open by May 2026, will cover an area of 4,200 square metres and feature an Olympic-size rink measuring 60 metres by 30 metres. The facility will include modern amenities such as food and beverage outlets, a rehabilitation room, and a sports shop, making it more than just a sports complex.

The Dwarka ice arena is strategically located with excellent connectivity via the Urban Extension Road (UER), Dwarka Expressway, and the airport tunnel linking Sector-21 to Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport. This strategic location will ensure easy access for athletes and spectators alike.

The arena is expected to serve as a "Centre of Excellence" for athletes to train at global standards. Commissioner of Sports, Ruhee Dugg, described the facility as both a serious training ground and a leisure destination. The Dwarka ice arena is significant for India as it brings international-standard winter sports facilities to Delhi.

The project is expected to improve India's chances at platforms like the Winter Olympics and Asian Winter Games. The arena may potentially host global events for ice hockey, figure skating, and curling, providing a platform for Indian athletes to showcase their skills on an international stage.

The ice arena will also offer public skating sessions and entertainment shows, making it a popular destination for recreation and entertainment. It will be open to the public and professional sports teams for training, contributing to the growth of winter sports in India.

The contract for the construction and operation of the Olympic-standard ice sports center in Dwarka Sector 23 was awarded to the company J & K Sports Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. The arena will provide year-round access to an Olympic-size rink for various winter sports like figure skating, ice hockey, and curling.

The Dwarka ice arena is located in a sub-city that is already home to the country's longest 18-hole golf course and a Centre of Excellence in sports. This makes it part of a growing sports hub in Delhi, further enhancing its potential to foster the growth of winter sports in India. The arena is undoubtedly a landmark moment for India's sporting infrastructure.
