Ibiza and Mallorca Battle Extreme Storms and Flooding
Ibiza and Mallorca are grappling with severe storms and flooding, with heavy rain and thunderstorms causing chaos across the Balearic Islands. The Spanish weather service Aemet has issued its highest warning level for Ibiza and Formentera due to extreme danger of flooding and flash floods. Meanwhile, Balearic President Marga Prohens has rushed to Ibiza to oversee emergency response efforts.
The remnants of Ex-Hurricane Gabrielle are responsible for the deluge, with 74 liters of rain per square meter falling near Ibiza Airport in just a few hours. This has led to severe flooding, closing access to the airport and several roads around Ibiza city. The fire department has been working tirelessly, making over twenty interventions in the morning to rescue people from trapped cars and apartments.
On Mallorca, heavy rain and thunderstorms have caused delays of up to two hours at Mallorca Airport. Torrential rains have led to massive flooding on both Ibiza and Mallorca, with life-threatening storms also reported in Italy, Croatia, and Greece. Up to 200 liters of rain per square meter is expected in these regions.
The situation in Ibiza and Mallorca remains critical, with the highest warning level in place. Emergency services are stretched thin, responding to numerous calls for help. President Prohens is coordinating the emergency response team, but the name of the person leading the team on the ground remains unknown. Travelers are advised to avoid the affected areas and follow local guidance.
