Forum: Hydrogen - A Key to Climate Neutrality - Hydrogen Buses Lead Germany's 2045 Climate Neutrality Push

The 20th Baltic Transport Forum in Rostock-Warnemünde recently gathered 50 experts to discuss hydrogen's role in achieving Germany's 2045 climate neutrality goal. The event, organised by an unspecified company, highlighted the potential of hydrogen buses, with local operator Rebus already running over 52 of them.

Hydrogen, when burned with oxygen, produces only water, making it a clean energy source. The forum explored its use in transport, with Rebus' hydrogen buses and refuelling stations serving as a local success story. Electrolysis, the process of creating hydrogen from water using electricity, was discussed. Despite being energy-intensive, it's seen as crucial for storing renewable energy, like wind power, for a climate-neutral future.

The Federal Ministry of Transport has invested heavily in hydrogen and fuel cell R&D, funding around 120 projects since 2016. This totals 536 million euros, with additional funds from other sources bringing the total to around 900 million euros. The National Organisation for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NOW), a federal-owned company, is involved in these efforts. More projects are expected to be funded by the end of the current programme next year.

The Baltic Transport Forum underscored hydrogen's potential as a key to climate neutrality. With Rebus' hydrogen buses already in operation and significant government investment, Germany is moving towards its 2045 climate neutrality goal. Clean energy storage solutions, like hydrogen production using wind power, are crucial for a sustainable future.
