Hydrochloric Acid Leak in Oldenburg: 70 Responders Contain Hazardous Fumes

Emergency services in Oldenburg responded to a hydrochloric acid leak at an industrial facility on Commercial Street on October 11, 2025. The incident involved a significant haze in a production hall and no danger to the public.

Upon arrival, the Ganderkesee fire department discovered the haze and suspected hydrochloric acid. They promptly called for backup, leading to the deployment of the Oldenburg district's Hazardous Materials Team, comprising around 70 responders. A team in breathing protection and special chemical protective clothing entered the affected hall to investigate.

The liquid was successfully neutralized using a special binding agent, preventing further spread. After the leak was neutralized, the container store was sealed and secured. The hall was then ventilated for about three hours to clear any remaining hazardous fumes, concluding the operation.

All deployed personnel were decontaminated using a decontamination shower following the incident. The investigation confirmed that hydrochloric acid had leaked from a transport container store. Throughout the event, the Kreis Fire Department Oldenburg's press office, consisting of Tom Kramer, Jannik Stiller, and Matthias Witthöft, was available for events and press inquiries.
