Huskies of Washington place fourth in the women's NCAA rowing tournament championships.
Rowing Rough Seas: Huskies Miss Out on NCAA Title
Mercer Lake turned choppy for the Washington Huskies as they pursued the NCAA women's rowing championship on Sunday, delivering a spirited performance but ultimately ending up in fourth place.
The Huskies shone in the early races, securing a strong second-place finish in the varsity four and the second varsity eight. This solid start left them in second place heading into the final race of the day, the varsity eight, the climax packed with precious points.
Yale took the winning charge in that critical race, while top-ranked Stanford, who had already clinched the varsity four and the second varsity eight, snagged second place and snatched the national title with 129 points. Washington struggled in the final race, finishing in fifth place.
Yale outmaneuvered third-ranked Washington to finish second, racking up 121 points. Second-ranked Texas, too, surged ahead of the Huskies, claiming the third spot with 118 points, while Washington trailed with 117 points.
From the get-go, Washington set the pace in the morning's first race, the varsity four, holding the lead through about 1,500 meters. Yet, Stanford's unyielding determination paid off, gradually overtaking the Huskies and never relinquishing their lead. Washington faced a tough battle against Texas but held their ground, eventually securing a well-earned second place.
The race finishes were: Stanford – 6 minutes, 56.532 seconds, Washington – 06:58.598, and Texas – 6:59.548. In the second varsity eight, Washington never wavered behind Stanford's dominant charge, their finish times clocking in at 6:14.931, as Stanford crossed the line at 6:13.075.
The Huskies failed to mount a serious challenge in the decisive varsity eight race, finishing a disappointing six seconds behind Yale and 1.6 seconds behind fourth-place Tennessee.
