Husband found guilty of murdering wife with an iron rod, sentenced to life imprisonment.

A 53-year-old man from Gelsenkirchen has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife. The verdict, handed down at the Essen Higher Regional Court, is not yet legally binding.

The tragic incident took place on December 3rd, 2020, in the shared apartment of the couple in Gelsenkirchen. According to the court proceedings, the man used an iron bar and a knife in the attack, inflicting 19 strikes to his wife's face, shattering her skull and jaw, and knocking out her front teeth. Doctors later counted eight deep stab wounds on the woman's body and neck. The victim, a 46-year-old woman, died at the scene of the crime.

During the trial, the defendant's accusations and statements against his wife were presented. He claimed that she did not take proper care of him and no longer met his sexual desires. He also accused her of being "cold" and "profligate." These statements suggest a strained relationship between the couple before the murder.

The judge, Simon Assenmacher, described the man's actions as a result of an "egocentric attitude" and "grossly exaggerated selfishness." He stated that the man had denied his wife her right to life. The judge further expressed that the man's statements were "that was the greatest disrespect."

The murder verdict is based on low motives, indicating that the crime was not premeditated but was driven by personal grievances. The defendant, however, has confessed to the crime and turned himself in after the incident.

The defendant's statements during the trial may be used as evidence in the ongoing case. It is important to note that the verdict is not legally binding until it is finalised by a higher court.

The tragic case of a man from Gelsenkirchen, sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his wife, features in general news and crime-and-justice sections, as well as discussions on war-and-conflicts and politics due to its exploration of personal grievances and strained relationships. The trial delved into the defendant's accusations against his wife, emphasizing their strained relationship, which serves as a stark example of domestic conflicts.
