Hurricane Kiko to Bring Heavy Rain, Gusty Winds to Hawaii
Hurricane Kiko, though weakening, is set to bring heavy rain and gusty winds to Hawaii from west to east on Tuesday and Wednesday. Despite losing intensity, Kiko remains a significant threat as it tracks north of the main Hawaiian Islands.
As of Monday evening, Kiko was a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. It was located about 300 miles east-northeast of Hilo. While Kiko is expected to lose wind intensity as it moves over cooler waters, it will spread locally heavy rain and gusty winds across Hawaii. Swells generated by Kiko have already reached Hawaii Island and Maui, and are expected to spread to the rest of the main Hawaiian Islands. Meteorologists, including those from the National Weather Service and private weather services like The Weather Channel, are closely monitoring Kiko's progress. Kiko will also bring heavy surf to the islands.
Hurricane Kiko is forecast to pass north of the Big Island and all the main Hawaiian Islands today and Wednesday. Although Kiko is expected to weaken, residents should still prepare for locally heavy rain, gusty winds, and heavy surf. Disruptions to trade wind patterns may also lead to localized fire danger.
