Hurricane Ida's Impact on Natural Gas Prices: What to Expect

The aftermath of Hurricane Ida has left many wondering about the potential impact on natural gas prices. While the storm has caused significant damage to the Gulf Coast, the exact repercussions on the energy market remain unclear. Let's explore the possible scenarios.

The Damage and Disruptions

Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast, causing widespread destruction and disruptions. The storm resulted in at least one death and led to over a million power outages. Additionally, it forced the closure of offshore oil drilling operations and pipelines in the Gulf of Mexico, which may impact natural gas supply.

Good News and Bad News

Just a day after the storm, gasoline prices remained stable at an average of $3.15 per gallon. However, gasoline futures in the wholesale market saw a modest increase of around 5 cents. By Sunday evening, the futures surged even further, rising up to 10 cents per gallon. This trend suggests that retail prices could follow suit soon.

It is worth noting that gasoline prices have been climbing steadily since they hit their lowest point in April 2020. Despite the economic downturn caused by the pandemic, as Americans started venturing back onto the roads, gasoline demand soared, driving up prices by 41% since August.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement reported that before Hurricane Ida, 95% of US oil production on offshore platforms and rigs in the Gulf of Mexico was shut down. These facilities will remain closed for an undetermined period, according to Tom Kloza, global director for energy analysis at the Oil Price Information Service, which tracks AAA gas prices.

Kloza also mentioned that most significant refineries in the region had closed or reduced production, and it's uncertain when things will return to normal. Even giant pipelines transporting natural gas, diesel, and jet fuel from the Gulf Coast to other states might face shutdowns. This could further exacerbate the gasoline shortage and drive up prices.

What About Natural Gas Tariffs?

While Hurricane Ida has not directly impacted natural gas tariffs yet, they are likely to enter the conversation soon. Natural gas tariffs can cause immediate price swings in power markets, especially for utilities like PacifiCorp, Portland General Electric, and Puget Sound Energy that are not fully hedged against these prices. However, the impact of Hurricane Ida on natural gas prices remains to be seen.

In 2005, after Hurricane Katrina, there was a $0.46, or 18%, per-gallon spike in the average gasoline price. However, that was a worst-case scenario, as many refineries in the region were flooded and were out of service for months.

If Hurricane Ida causes similar disruptions, gasoline prices in the southeastern United States could spike significantly. Currently, the average price in this region is below $3 per gallon. Nevertheless, other factors like the upcoming OPEC meeting could also influence prices.

In conclusion, Hurricane Ida has caused significant damage and disruptions to the Gulf Coast, which could have consequences for natural gas prices. While it's too early to predict the magnitude and duration of the price increase, it is prudent to prepare for potential price swings in the coming weeks.
