Expediting the Hunt for the Sylt Jackal Now Initiated Earlier Than Usual - Hunt for Sylt-Chakal's Departure Accelerates

The golden jackal on Sylt hasn't been caught yet, days after an official exemption permit was issued for its hunt. Thomas Diedrichsen, coordinating the hunt on Sylt, talked to the German Press Agency (dpa), stating, "We've spread out in Lister Koog and on the Ellenbogen with twelve hunters."

Night-time hunts are now happening at various locations across the island. "It turns out he doesn't come out at dusk, but rather around 10:15 pm when it's still daylight on Sylt," said the Sylt hunter. In response, the hunters have started setting up earlier in the evening. "But it's all futile if we don't know where he is," they added.

A veterinarian reportedly spotted the jackal in Rantum on Sunday, but its whereabouts are unclear. No more sheep or lambs have been attacked since Friday night.

The Sylt hunting association, consisting of ten districts and approximately 120 hunters, is spearheading the hunt. Roughly 20 to 30 members are involved in the operation on the 99 square kilometer island. The hunt not only includes the use of stands but also other undisclosed methods to locate the animal, lest it disturbs the peace. Despite this secrecy, Diedrichsen remains optimistic, "I hope it won't take until the end of July to catch the animal."

The animal has been responsible for killing 90 sheep and lambs on the island since May 19. The Schleswig-Holstein State Environment Agency issued an artenschutzrechtliche exemption permit for its shooting, effective since June 5 and expiring on July 31. This would mark the first confirmed shooting of a golden jackal in Germany, according to the German Hunting Association (DJV).
