Hungary's Prime Minister, Orbán, orchestrating his own political spectacle
In a series of statements, Hungary's Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, has criticised the crime situation in Sweden, labelling it as chaos and danger, and drawing comparisons to the biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. These remarks have caused controversy and outrage among the European Union (EU) and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) partners.
Orbán, who is known for his conservative views, has been monitoring issues in Scandinavia, particularly Sweden, during his election campaign. He has claimed that approximately three hundred girls have been arrested for murder in Sweden, and that barbarism has replaced public order there.
The Hungarian leader's criticisms are seen as an attempt to gain political advantage, both domestically and in Hungary's upcoming election. Orbán's statements about Sweden are being used to appeal to a certain political base in Hungary, and to gain votes by portraying the situation in Sweden as chaotic and dangerous.
The EU and NATO partner mentioned by Orbán in his criticism is, in fact, Sweden itself. The Swedish parliamentary election that Orbán's statements may influence took place in September of the current or upcoming year. Orbán's criticism of Sweden’s issues with organised crime came to the forefront during his own election campaign around this time.
The Sweden Democrats, a far-right political party in Sweden, have been using a "horror picture" to gain votes. However, Orbán has expressed sympathy for the Swedish people, stating that everything is under control in his own country due to measures against "illegal migrants."
Orbán sees himself as the defender of Western Christianity, and his criticisms of Sweden's crime situation may be seen as part of this self-proclaimed role. The alleged Sodom and Gomorrah in the North is a reference to the situation in Sweden, and Orbán is using this alleged Sodom and Gomorrah to score domestic political points.
These statements have led to outraged reactions from the EU and NATO partners, who view Orbán's criticisms as misleading and harmful to Sweden's reputation. The situation in Sweden, according to Orbán, suffers from high levels of violence and gang crime, but it remains to be seen how these criticisms will impact Sweden's political landscape in the long run.
