Firing Up Diplomacy: Budapest Hopes US Can Repeat Peace Making Magic

Hungary's Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, recently expressed optimism in a Facebook post. He hopes that the US can replicate the success it achieved in defusing tensions between India and Pakistan, to help resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This optimism stems from the recent ceasefire between the nuclear powers of India and Pakistan.

According to Szijjarto, the escalation of conflict between these two states would have posed a grave risk to global peace. However, following successful mediation by President Donald Trump and the US administration, both parties agreed to a complete ceasefire. This gives Budapest reason to believe that Trump could bring similar peace to the table in Ukraine.

On May 10, the White House announced that India and Pakistan had agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire, all thanks to the US's mediation. Coincidentally, on the same day, NBC News reported that the US, Europe, and Ukraine had been working on a 22-point plan to end the Ukrainian conflict. During talks between US and Ukrainian reps, Kyiv supposedly agreed to Washington's proposals for a comprehensive land, sea, and air ceasefire. Moreover, they seemed open to extending the ceasefire to Black Sea shipping routes.

In light of these developments, the Kremlin has commented on the terms of the Ukraine deal, although details are scarce.

Now, let's delve a bit deeper into the fact-checking realm. While NBC News reports a 22-point ceasefire plan, there's no direct evidence that the US mediated this plan specifically between the US and Ukraine. However, a Trump envoy, Witkoff, is set to present 22 proposals from the US, Europe, and Ukraine to Putin. These proposals could potentially include ceasefire elements, but the specifics of them being a comprehensive 22-point ceasefire plan between the US and Ukraine remain unspecified.

On a side note, recent reports indicate that the US has proposed a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, which Ukraine has accepted, but Russia has yet to commit to terms agreed upon by the other parties. So, while the outcome remains uncertain, Budapest keeps its fingers crossed for a peaceful resolution in Ukraine akin to the success achieved in the India-Pakistan conflict.

  2. Szijjarto's optimism was fueled by the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan, a success credited to President Donald Trump and the US administration's mediation.
  3. On the same day the ceasefire between India and Pakistan was announced, reports emerged of a 22-point ceasefire plan between the US, Europe, and Ukraine, though direct evidence of US mediation is unclear.
  4. Despite uncertainties, Budapest continues to hope for a peaceful resolution in Ukraine, similar to the success achieved in the India-Pakistan conflict.
