Unleashing the Political Drama: The Case of Péter Magyar
Hungary once more aims to rescind immunity privileges for opposition MEP Peter Marki-Zay
In the heart of Hungarian politics, Péter Magyar, leader of the Tisza party and Member of the European Parliament (MEP), finds himself in the eye of a storm. Accusations of financial irregularities, insider trading, and smear campaigns are casting a long shadow on his political future.
A New Legal Landscape
Hungary's unique law, coined "Lex Magyar" by critics, has added a layer of complexity to the situation. This law, applicable only to MEPs, demands detailed asset declarations with no room for error or correction. If found wanting, Magyar could face the loss of his MEP status, a potential stumbling block in his political journey.
The Allegations
The allegations against Magyar are many. Leaked recordings from his former partner suggest he holds a 90 million HUF stake, allegedly earned through unlawful means. However, Magyar vehemently denies any wrongdoing, stating that no insider trading took place. The Hungarian Central Bank is currently investigating these claims.
Legal Battles Afoot
The Hungarian Prosecutor’s Office has launched two immunity-related proceedings against Magyar. If successful, these could potentially lead to a revocation of his parliamentary immunity, threatening his ability to serve as an MEP.
Smear Campaigns and Threats
In addition to the legal proceedings, Magyar claims to be on the receiving end of smear campaigns, including threats of compromising sex videos (real or AI-generated) and the planting of drugs in his or his colleagues' properties. Magyar denies any personal misconduct and challenges his opponents to undergo similar scrutiny. Moreover, daily threats aimed at his family, concerning potential loss of joint custody and imprisonment, have also been reported.
Implications for the Next Election
If convicted, Magyar could be barred from running in future elections. The new legislation, coupled with ongoing immunity proceedings, increases the risk of losing his MEP mandate, potentially disqualifying him from holding public office. The allegations and potential smear campaigns could also damage his public standing, making it more difficult for him to campaign effectively or gain support in the 2026 general elections.
A Long and winding Procedure
Until the Hungarian authorities revoke Magyar's immunity, they cannot indict him. Once this request is communicated to the European Parliament, it will be discussed in the Parliament's legal affairs (or JURI) committee, which must appoint a rapporteur and arrange for two rounds of discussion on the issue, inviting the MEP in question to a hearing. The outcome of these discussions will determine Magyar's fate, either leading to a revocation of his immunity or a continuation of his political journey.
