Hungary advocates for peace negotiations with the Western world concerning Ukraine.

In recent statements, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has expressed his concerns about Ukraine's potential membership in NATO, arguing that it could escalate the conflict with Russia and risk a full-scale European war.

Orbán believes that peace can only be achieved when Ukraine and Western countries accept that Russia will never allow NATO to establish a presence on its western border through Ukraine. He sees Ukraine's NATO ambitions as a driver that has violated the global balance of forces, contributing to the war’s outbreak.

The Hungarian Prime Minister dismisses the notion of a realistic Russian military threat to Europe and criticizes EU militarization efforts as misguided and likely to produce faulty policies. Hungary opposes sending weapons to Ukraine and favors diplomacy over escalation, emphasizing that Ukraine’s defense does not impact Hungary’s security directly and warning against provoking confrontation with Russia.

On the other side, Russian President Vladimir Putin views Ukraine's NATO membership as a direct threat to Russia's national security. Moscow condemns NATO's expansion towards its borders, including via Ukraine, as a "red line" and considers it a primary cause of the conflict escalation. The Kremlin sees NATO and EU military build-ups and reallocations of funds to defense as aggressive "rabid militarization" against Russia.

Orbán and Putin share a common stance on Ukraine joining NATO but emphasize different aspects. Orbán focuses on preventing a broader war in Europe by promoting diplomacy and European peace, while Putin frames Ukraine’s NATO ambitions as an intolerable security threat justifying Russia’s defensive actions.

In Orbán's view, a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, and a comprehensive agreement between them, is the key to achieving peace in Ukraine. This perspective underscores the complexity of the situation and the need for diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation.
