Mats Hummels Announces Retirement after One Season with AS Roma

In a poignant finale, German footballer Mats Hummels retired from professional football in the 90th minute of AS Roma's match against FC Turin. Hummels, the World Cup winner, had just three minutes of extra time to play before his career came to an end.

Throughout the game, trainer Claudio Ranieri opted to keep Hummels on the bench, favouring a stronger lineup to secure Champions League qualification. Despite his diminished role, Hummels was honored by his teammates at the game's end, being tossed in the air seven times.

Roma's match against Juventus Turin was a crucial battle for Champions League qualification. Though Roma led 2-0, Juventus's victory over Venice secured the championship for SSC Napoli, leaving Roma in fifth place and out of the Champions League.

Hummels joined AS Roma in September 2024, following a departure from BVB at the end of the season. His move may have been precipitated by an interview he gave to "Sport-Bild" in the spring of 2024, where he indirectly criticized then-BVB coach Edin Terzic. After the Champions League final that season, Hummels had no future with Borussia Dortmund.

During his time with AS Roma, Hummels struggled with challenges, such as scoring an own goal in his first appearance. He became a late-match hero in many games, but his collaboration with Roma was limited to one year. In early April, Hummels announced his intention to retire at the end of the current season. His journey with the Italians is documented in the ZDF film "Hummels - La Finale."

Throughout his career, Hummels achieved remarkable success with Borussia Dortmund, AS Roma, and the German national team. He won five German championships and three DFB Cups with FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund. As a key player in the successful BVB team under coach Jürgen Klopp, he won the championship in 2011 and 2012 and the DFB Cup in 2012.

Hummels was a vital part of Germany's 2014 FIFA World Cup-winning squad, displaying his defensive prowess and scoring crucial goals, such as the winning goal against France in the quarterfinals. He also won the 2009 U21 European Championship and represented Germany in multiple tournaments, including Euro 2012 and Euro 2016. In 78 international matches, he scored five goals.
