Merlin Hummel, one of the faces of a young and promising German athletics generation, has made history by winning the silver medal in the hammer throw event at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. This is the first medal for a German hammer thrower at the World Championships in 20 years.

Hummel, who is studying applied artificial intelligence at a distance university, easily exceeded the qualifying distance of 78.54 meters in the preliminary round. His best attempt was thrown in the first round of the competition, where he recorded a distance of 82.77 meters – his personal best.

Ethan Katzberg from Canada took the gold medal with a championship record of 84.70 meters. However, Hummel's impressive performance did not go unnoticed. His coach, Martin Staendner, hinted at his impressive training sessions leading up to the event.

Last year, Hummel finished fourth at the European Championships in Rome. But this time around, he managed to reach the podium at a major event for the first time, making him the first member of this young generation to do so.

The silver medal also marks the third German medal overall at the Tokyo World Championships. It's worth noting that Markus Esser was the last German to win a World Championship medal in 2005. Karsten Kobs was the last German to win a World Championship title in 1999.

The German top female triple jumper, Caroline Joyeux, qualified for the final in the World Championships. Unfortunately, Jessie Maduka missed the final.

Hummel's sports-oriented diet, which includes six eggs every morning, seems to be paying off. His medal has revitalized the German men's hammer throw, providing hope for future success in the sport.

Despite narrowly missing the podium at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, Hummel's achievement at the World Championships serves as a testament to his dedication and talent. The search results do not explicitly mention the name of his coach, but it is clear that Hummel's journey in the world of athletics is just beginning.
