Humanitarian organizations in Gaza demand a break from the alleged inaction concerning Israel's activities
In the troubled region of Gaza, dozens of humanitarian organizations stand ready to provide aid, yet access remains consistently denied. The situation has escalated to a critical point, with the international community facing criticism for inaction.
Recent reports suggest that the Israeli response in Gaza, which began nearly two years ago, has resulted in the deaths of over 65,000 Palestinians, including nearly 20,000 children. Accusations of murder, grave injuries, prevented births, and the intentional creation of living conditions likely to result in total or partial physical destruction of the Palestinians in Gaza have been levelled against Israel.
The United Nations Investigation Commission has qualified the situation in Gaza as genocide. The International Court of Justice, as early as January 2024, recognised a "real risk" of genocide being committed in Gaza and ordered Israel and all signatory countries to take measures to prevent such a tragedy.
Despite this, the Canadian government has not endorsed the commission's conclusions regarding genocide, but has opposed the expansion of Israel's military operation in Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire. Germany is the only state worldwide that has committed to defending Israel against the commission's genocide accusations, while the United States has refrained from doing so. Many other states have not committed to international measures to end the genocide-conflict as designated by the UN investigation commission.
The question of genocide in Gaza is currently before the International Court of Justice. The joint declaration signed by twenty humanitarian organizations, including Oxfam-Quebec and Humanity and Inclusion Canada, calls for the use of all political, economic, and legal tools to intervene. The protection of civilians is emphasized as a priority concern.
NGOs in Gaza are refusing to submit to a new registration process imposed by Israel. The militarization of aid is deadly, and the state of famine in Gaza was officially declared on August 22. Access to humanitarian aid in Gaza is constantly denied.
The Government of Mark Carney is being urged to act, including stopping arms transfers, increasing diplomatic pressure on Israel, reviewing economic agreements with Israel, adopting sanctions against members of the Israeli government, and stopping trade with illegal colonies in Cisjordan.
The international community is under scrutiny for not taking concrete measures to stop the genocide. The plight of the Palestinians in Gaza continues to be a pressing issue, with the hope that global action will soon follow.
